Living with diabetes can be a very challenging situation. You need to be careful especially about the food that you eat. Although diabetics generally are prohibited from eating certain types of food, this does not mean that you, or a loved one that is diabetic, can no longer enjoy the pleasure of eating. As a matter of fact, a diabetic still has many kinds of delicious foods to choose from. These kinds of food are known to be naturally safe for diabetics to eat. 1. Know what you are eating. The secret, actually, to good nutrition is to be choosy. So that you can choose well, you have to be consciously aware of what you are eating. This is a very important rule for diabetics who need to take control of their diet.


2. Check the label of packaged food. Almost all labels on food packaging bear not just the ingredients but also the nutritional facts. Be alert to saturated fats and high sugar content. Take note of the total carbohydrate and sugar content from starch, fiber, and sugar components of the packaged food. What matters is not the type of carbohydrate but the total amount of carbohydrates.


3. Limit your carbohydrate intake. Carbohydrates come in three forms: complex carbohydrates such as starch, sugar, and fiber. They are known to jack up your blood glucose. So, place a cap on your consumption of food rich in carbs.


4. Eat enough fruits and vegetables, but not too much. Fruits and vegetables, especially the green and leafy type of vegetables, generally don’t contain as much natural sugar as others. The natural sugar in fruits and vegetables can still raise your blood glucose, you know. Mushrooms are safe to eat. So, next time you ponder upon your salad plate, choose which fruit or vegetable you need to set aside.


5. Don’t forget your protein intake. Dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt are good sources of protein and calcium, which are essential to your body’s proper functioning. But, choose the low-fat kind. You can still eat meat, too. Just eat moderately. Skinless chicken breast, for example, is rich in protein as is fish. It is also a good idea to go for lean meat and to remove all visible traces of fat before cooking the meat.


6. Give in to your sweet tooth, but don’t give in too much. Most sweets and desserts serve a huge amount of total carbohydrates and sugars even in very small servings. When you indulge your sweet tooth, make sure to consume only a very small serving. The key, again, is in eating the right amount wisely.
